Learn to Navigate

Navigate ˈnavəˌɡāt/ Travel on a desired course after planning a route

Navigation is in our blood at Stony Brook.  Whether it is learning how to sail on the Long Island Sound in one of our 30 boats under the guidance of experienced captains, or learning how to fly in our state of the art fight simulator under the tutelage of seasoned flight instructors, Brookers learn how to get from point a to point b.  But our concept of navigation is actually much broader than sea or air travel.   At Stony Brook we teach you how to navigate life.

As a young person, you likely have a lot of questions: Who am I?  What am I good at?    What do I want to do with my life? At Stony Brook our motto is Character Before Career which means that who you are as a person is more important than what you do for your vocation. Character before Career does not mean that career is not important!  Career success is best defined as doing something you are good at, that you actually enjoy, that benefits others.

At Stony Brook we believe that teenagers can learn to discover the passions and aptitudes that will ultimately inform their career path choices.  We believe that every human being has been endowed with passions and gifts that are waiting to be discovered and put into service of humanity.  Through a program we call Vocational Discipleship, we help students discover these passion and gifts.  We use a variety of surveys and batteries including the Myers Briggs Typology test and the Highlands Battery which are designed to bring to the surface those aspects of our personalities that might be hidden to us.  In addition, through our mini courses, we offer students a wide variety of interests to explore through the classes that we offer.  From improv acting to studying the history of the Netherlands to building drones and submersibles, students get to explore a variety of different topics so that they might have a better understanding of what truly interests them.  Seasoned mentors, walk with students over the course of their time at Stony Brook really getting to know the students under their care and therefore providing rich insight into student lives.

All of these data points come together to form a picture so that you might plan life after Stony Brook armed with more purpose and more confidence.

And if that were not enough, we teach wisdom at Stony Brook. Wisdom is best defined at being good at life.  What would it be like, if no matter what the situation, you always knew the right thing to do?  Impossible?  In the book of Proverbs it states,  How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver!  And in Ecclesiastes we read Wisdom makes one wise person more powerful than ten rulers in a city.   Through our chapel program, our close mentorship of students and our willingness to help students learn from their failures, we impart lasting wisdom and those who listen are prepared to navigate life with all of its complexities.
