How to Apply

We want to thank you for your interest in applying to The Stony Brook School. We look forward to working with you and your family as you embark on this exciting journey from inquiry to enrollment.

Please note that at this time (rolling admissions season) SBS has a limited number of spots available. We encourage all prospective families to contact (admissions@sbs.org or 631-751-1800 x1) the Admissions Office before submitting an application.

List of 7 items.

  • Step 1. Online Inquiry Form

The first step in the application process is to inquire. If you have not already filled out our inquiry form, we invite you to do so now by clicking here. Once you complete the inquiry form, we will add you to our database of prospective families.

If you are ready to jump right in and apply, you may skip this step and proceed to our online application.
  • Step 2. Online Application

The Stony Brook School offers two options to apply.

We recommend that all applicants use our custom Stony Brook School application through SchoolAdmin. Our office also accepts the Standard Application Online (SAO). The application fee for domestic students is $100 while international students will pay $250.

We encourage you to utilize our Early Enrollment option if SBS is your first choice. All application materials must be received by the Admissions Office by Monday, December 13, 2021. If you miss this deadline, you are welcome to use our Standard Enrollment option which requires that all application materials be received by the Admissions Office by Friday, January 21, 2022

Applicants that miss the Standard Enrollment deadline will have their files reviewed after March 10, 2022 as part of our rolling admissions process. Please contact the Admissions Office (admissions@sbs.org or 631-751-1800 x1) for more information.
  • Step 3. Interview

Upon completion of the Student Biographic Profile and submission of the application fee, please contact the Admissions Office (admissions@sbs.org or 631-751-1800 x1) to schedule an interview.

Interviewing with a member of the Admissions Office is required in order to complete the application process. All interviews will be conducted via Webex. Chinese applicants should click here for more information about the interview process.

We encourage applicants to schedule their interviews well in advance of the deadline because slots will fill up quickly. Please note that you do not need to delay scheduling the interview in order to submit other required documents.
  • Step 4. Admissions Testing Score Reports

    Standardized Testing
Standardized testing is required for the 2021-2022 admissions cycle. SBS will accept any of the following tests: SSAT, ISEE, PSAT, SAT, PreACT, or ACT.

For those applicants in Grades 7-11 please include the code for SBS (7510) when registering for the SSAT. For all other tests please send a copy of the score report to the Admissions Office via email (admissions@sbs.org).

    Learning Services Testing
We encourage any applicant with an IEP or 504 plan to submit a recent neuropsychological testing report or a psychoeducational testing report. Please send the report to admissions@sbs.org in PDF format.

    English Language Testing
All applicants for whom English is not their first language are required to take an English language proficiency exam. Our office prefers the TOEFL iBT exam. When registering, please use the following code (8083) in order to send us the applicant's scores directly. Please note that our office does not accept TOEFL's MyBest Score.

If the TOEFL is not available, international applicants can consider taking the IELTS or Duolingo test.

Even if the applicant has studied in the United States for several years or is currently attending an international school with an American or British curriculum, the student may still need to take a test. Please contact the Admissions Office at admissions@sbs.org or 631-751-1800 x1 for further questions.
  • Step 5. Recommendation Forms

SBS requires an English teacher recommendation and a math teacher recommendation from the current teacher (2021-2022 academic year). If the applicant will be applying for Early Enrollment, you may contact a teacher from the 2020-2021 academic year to complete the recommendation form.

Families must request recommendation forms from their teachers within the application portal. If school personnel experience any trouble receiving these forms or sending them back to the Admissions Office, please contact us (admissions@sbs.org or 631-751-1800 x1).
  • Step 6. Official School Reports and Transcripts/Report Cards

Each applicant must arrange for the Admissions Office to receive the following items:

    • Principal/Guidance Counselor Form/Official School Report
    • Final report cards/transcripts from the previous two academic years
    • Report card/transcript for the current academic year (2021-22), which should include grades from at least one marking period or one quarter

There are two options for sending transcripts/report cards:
    1. Items can be sent via either electronic application.
    2. Items can be scanned and sent via email to admissions@sbs.org.

For International Applicants: If transcripts are in a foreign language, please include a notarized English translation.
  • Step 7. Applying For Financial Aid

Families interested in financial aid can start the process as of September 1, 2021. If you are applying for Early Enrollment, your family should complete the process (the application and supporting financial documents) by December 1, 2021. If you are taking advantage of the Standard Enrollment option, your family should complete the process by February 1, 2022. Financial aid applications will still be considered after these deadlines, but the Admissions Office cannot guarantee that funds will still be available. Any family applying for FA should be aware that the partner code for SBS is 200375. This code can be used to search for SBS within the financial aid portal.

Any family applying for financial aid should indicate their desires on the admissions application. Please note that financial aid decisions are made based on a family’s demonstrated financial need and determined on a case-by-case basis. The vast majority of financial aid is allocated to domestic applicants.

For those applicants that are offered acceptance, the financial aid award will be delivered along with the enrollment contract.
