School Mental Health Counselor

Established in 1922, The Stony Brook School is a co-ed, Christian, college preparatory (grades 7-12) boarding and day school situated on a beautiful 55-acre campus on the north shore of Long Island in New York. The School Mental Health Counselor at the Stony Brook school is responsible for overseeing the overall well-being of students while considering--academics, medical treatment, residential life, family, culture, social/peers, assessments, history, behaviors, presenting concerns, etc.  This information is applied by executing interventions, administering treatment plans, collaboration with student supports, crisis management, conducting groups, and providing individual sessions.  In addition, this position requires a high level of confidentiality in accordance with ethical practice, and adheres to school policy with regard to who and when to disclose information for student and school safety.  
The School Mental Health Counselor is also responsible for designing programs for students, developing training for staff, and promoting professional development relating to areas of need as they relate to mental health.  This position also works to make resources available and accessible to the community using the network of support on and off-campus. 


Specific Responsibilities: 

  • Reports to the Director of Counseling Services
  • Use results from Needs Assessment to design programs, groups, and speakers
  • Collaborate with outside network of providers to maintain relationships and integrate services when needed as outlined in protocol
  • Use Google Form Referral system to guide intaking
  • Use a Behavior plan when necessary to collaborated with parents, academic support, teachers, nurse and administration for tracking progress and creating a unified approach to care
  • Use evidence-based strategies for interventions and adhere to ethical standards/best practice for school counseling
  • Have a knowledge base therapeutic intervention strategies (CBT, DBT, Systems, etc) in order to integrate outside providers interventions school treatment plan when appropriate
  • Demonstrate computer competency and ability to integrate MagnaCare to track data, take notes after each session, document intakes and referrals, schedule appointments and access information from other departments that would be necessary when creating strategy
  • Attend Continuing Education seminars and trainings to enhance skill and expertise
  • Manage high risk students using protocol, and create plans for integrating students in crisis back into school environment
  • Design training for faculty and staff that reinforces protocols for accessing school support systems and tracking progress
  • Design groups for students--Groups targeted for students that may not fit mold of Stony Brook, Stress Management, Current Impacts on Mental Health, etc--to support needs collectively
  • Speak to students and invite speakers to address students in large group settings with topics that would be relevant to needs from assessment and coordinate with chapel and adviser groups
  • Communicate with parents
  • Demonstrates sensitivities to diversity of student body and is competent in fashioning approach to adhere to ethical standard for multicultural awareness and faith-based interventions
  • Drive boarding students, when appropriate, to evaluations or assessments
  • Manage all scheduling for off and on campus appointments
  • Manage billing and check requests for all providers
  • Arrange schedule for therapist/psychiatrist that works with the school and be a liaison between his/her services and boarding parents
  • Facilitates the Mentor Program in collaboration with the Director. 
  • Plans and implements monthly mental health emphasis events, working with student led team (Bear Necessities) and promotion in student body
  • Some night and weekend work will be required 

Minimum Qualifications 
  • Master’s Degree, NYS Licensed in field of mental health
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in school setting or clinical setting
  • Experience in working with multicultural populations
  • Strong organization skills with attention to detail
  • Effective written and communication skills
  • Excellence in planning and implementing projects
  • Experience in multi-faceted operations
  • Competency with computer systems, statistics, and evidence-based practice
