Helmer `22 Signs Letter of Intent

Caroline Helmer signed her National Letter of Intent to play Division III tennis next fall for Gordon College.
The senior has been a stalwart player for the girls' tennis team for the past two seasons, helping to lead them to undefeated campaigns and back-to-back tournament championships. In the 2020 title match against Portledge, Helmer, with her 1st doubles partner Sam Cox, overcame an early deficit in the first set to win 7-5 before winning five straight games in set two to win it, 6-2, and claim a pivotal match in the Bears' 3-2 win. While her tennis skills have made her an important part of the team, it is her winsome nature and quiet leadership that will be even more difficult to replace next year.

Helmer follows in the footsteps of Sarah Hickey '09 and Richie Armand '12 who also played tennis at Gordon and she is part of a larger lineage of nearly two dozen Stony Brook athletes that have played for the Scots. – Daniel Hickey `04, Director of Athletics

“I chose to play college tennis at Gordon because of how much sports at SBS have impacted me. Getting to be part of a supportive team of girls that lifted me up every day is something I will always cherish. SBS emphasizes excellence on the court, but also excellence in our personal lives, and within ourselves. I saw all these aspects in the Gordon College tennis program and wanted to continue what Stony Brook has taught me.” –Caroline Helmer `22
